A modern horror classic is turning 20 and has received a brand-new 4K restoration. Director Neil Marshall is coming to Oppdal in October to present the film at Ramaskrik
The Descent is simply a brilliant, claustrophobic, and intense film, and is regarded as one of the best horror movies of the 2000s. It’s a great pleasure for both the festival and the audience that Neil Marshall is coming to Ramaskrik.
Marshall also visited Ramaskrik in 2022 with his films The Lair and Dog Soldiers. He clearly had a great experience and didn’t hesitate to accept the invitation to return to Oppdal. A few weeks ago, the festival team attended the premiere of the 4K version of The Descent in London. The director was full of energy during the Q&A and is very pleased with how the film looks today. He’s very excited to return to the mountain town.
This is not just any guest. Neil Marshall helped reinvent the werewolf film and the horror genre with the frenetic Dog Soldiers. His second film, The Descent, which will be screened in Oppdal, is undoubtedly one of the most nerve-wracking horror films of the 2000s. Alongside directors like Eli Roth, James Wan, Rob Zombie, and Alexandre Aja, Marshall shaped the horror genre with innovative and often extremely violent films that had broad commercial appeal. The Descent is often highlighted as Marshall’s great masterpiece.
Over the past 20 years, Neil Marshall has given us films such as the post-apocalyptic Doomsday, sword-swinging Centurion, Hellboy, and The Lair, which was shown at Ramaskrik. He is also well known for directing some of the most intense episodes of Game of Thrones, as well as other TV series like Westworld, Black Sails, Hannibal, and Lost In Space. Marshall was Emmy-nominated for the Game of Thrones episode “The Watchers on the Wall.”
The Descent will be screened in collaboration with Trondheim Film Club, which is celebrating its 65th anniversary in 2025. Normally based at Cinemateket in Trondheim, the club is moving its celebration to Oppdal for the occasion of the Ramaskrik Film Festival, October 15–19.
